Texas Barbecue in Chiang Mai, Thailand - For American Tourists

...Along the Ping River in Chiang Mai it can get a little crazy with people drinking and setting off fireworks. What my wife and I do along with friends is reserve tables at one of the riverside restaurants. From here we watch the fireworks display and the lighted water parade in safety.

What we will do this year is go to Mae Jo on the 3rd and join in the releasing of the “Khome Loi”. On the 4th we will travel to Sukhothai and participate in the program there and spend the evening. We drive back to Chiang Mai in the early morning and have a party at our home on the 5th. On the 6th we will watch the festivities from a riverside restaurant and float our Krathongs.

For the party at our home I cook a Texas Barbeque with all the trimmings and my wife and her Thai friends make lots if Thai dishes. The city police block off our street 50 meters in each direction where we set up tables. We have performers playing live traditional northern Thai Music and female dancers in traditional dress. We hire a professional fireworks team who set off big aerial displays for us.

Bangkok, April 22...Miles travelled: 69542...We've arrived in Southeast Asia on the home stretch of our travels. After an 8-hour flight from Addis, we landed in Bangkok and met Anna's dad at the airport -- he traveled 36 hours from Columbia, South Carolina. We'll be on a 12-day tour with him covering Bangkok and northern Thailand. One unusual thing we noticed about 15 seconds after landing -- there's a golf course in between two active runways with no fences separating the golfers from the jumbo jets taking off. Hmmmm....

I totally disagree with RTH's comment regarding Lao Aviation. I thought service on the two flights I took far surpassed many U.S. carriers. Sure, there was no safety briefing, no mention of any need to fasten your seatbelts, very little english was spoken, and the air-con wasn't operating, but still....you got a great meal for a 45 minute flight, the planes were clean, and the boarding was orderly. And, best of all, the flights were dirt cheap!

Teddy Wong on trip from Texas to Thailand

How do I put this delicately?

That's what the pilot announced over the speakers about an hour into American Airlines flight 1869 travelling from Dallas to San Francisco on Jan 1st, 2006. He had just informed of the passengers and crew that an emergency landing was about to take place -- into Amarillo, Texas. "We have a loss of flight controls. We are seeing inputs into the flight controls that are not being made by myself or the first officer." Basically, our rudder was getting a mind of its own he later explained....

Global Warming Is A Myth - Examples from Texas and Thailand

Heavy snow in China – Mar 14, 2005 - Mountainous parts of Yunnan Province , China , have received more than a meter of snow in places. To the south, in northern Thailand , Chiang Rai received 21mm of rain in just one day, as much as they normally receive during the entire month of March. Meanwhile, in far northern Australia , Cyclone Ingrid dumped 97mm of rain – twice the monthly average – on Bathurst Island just north of Darwin.

In the United Stares, another winter storm left up to two feet of snow in southern Colorado before heading south towards Texas. To the east, Georgia is slowly recovering from its weekend ice storm.

Spots of Time: Leaving a Legacy - Blog about Thailand

Writer's Note: Much of the above historical data on Thailand comes from my Lonely Planet guidebook for Thailand - whose reputation is excellent but which, like most sources of information, is not completely infallible. Sure Lonely Planet can tell me that modern Thailand, slightly smaller than Texas or about the size of France, is a country of 62 million people, 95% of which are Buddhist. That Thailand offers all of its citizens free education until the age of twelve years old and has the highest literacy rate of all of South East Asia. I won't argue with that. But, the story of King Mongkut and Anna Leonowens reminds me that there are two sides to every story - and that I must be careful what information on Thailand I accept and which information I reject - be that from books, expats, Thais or other travelers. While gathering information is good, I also need to keep my eyes open and judge for myself. As a monk told me during my recent medidation course, "Don't just listen to what I say and take it to be true - do your own research and determine if this is right - if this works for you."
